Alvin Hung (born September 1, 1974) was the founder and former CEO of GoAnimate. He is a serial entrepreneur who has been passionate about technology and startups from a young age.

Background[]

Once he enrolled in Columbia University, Hung took double-majors in economics and computer programming. Afterwards, he went on to work for Oracle Inc. As years passed, Hung (intending to launch a program for producing animated videos; especially for his wife) founded GoAnimate (stylized as Go!Animate prior to 2013) in 2007. [1]

Changes to the site and Hung’s retirement[]

On January 15, 2015, the GoPlus subscription was removed due to lack of popularity. Around July 21, 2015, Hung removed social media functions due to apparent cyberbullying. He removed social media access for basic users almost a year prior on September 16, 2014.

He updated the video-maker, making "Business Friendly" ones on August 16, 2015, and that's when he crossed the line according to most GoAnimators.

Hung removed most of the voices on October 29 and removed all non-business themes after the transition to HTML5. It was eventually announced that most of the voices were removed because of GoAnimate's Text-To-Speech service’s licensing changes.

There was a rumor that he would remove the ability to add pictures, backgrounds and more. This change never came into place.

It was announced that the previously retired themes would remain on GA4S for a short period of time.

The Non-Business themes were retired on GoAnimate4Schools on July 26, 2016.

On July 16, 2019, it was announced that the Legacy Video Maker (or LVM) would retire in December of 2019 due to Adobe Flash retiring in 2020; the process would first begin on August 14 with users defaulting to the Vyond Studio maker. The LVM was set to be retired on December 14, 2019, but was delayed for 2 days for unknown reasons.

The site was rebranded from GoAnimate into Vyond on May 6, 2018.

Hung retired from being the CEO on September 7th, 2018 and passed the title to Gary Lipkowitz.

Criticism/Controversy[]

As a result of the changes, Alvin Hung was sometimes considered the "Devil/Satan" of the GoAnimate universe as depicted by many GoAnimators while blaming Hung for “ruining the site”. Hate videos began emerging online involving Hung getting grounded, receiving a punishment day, and/or getting killed. These videos were however also criticized for going too far.

A group known as the Anti-Alvin Hung Club (AAHC) was founded as a result of Hung's “destructive behavior” towards GoAnimate's platform and has even published an official t-shirt that could be purchased here. However, the t-shirt has been deleted from the website it was hosted on and is no longer available to buy.

Fanbase[]

While the hatedom was taking Hung too literal; the fanbase was also criticized for acting just as immature, while claiming that Alvin Hung was “poor and needs money”, despite being the CEO at the time.

Rumors were going around that Hung would shut down the site if users didn’t stop making videos targeting him; videos were made on what would’ve happened. The site however, never ended up going down.
